A customer portal is just a login page where your customers can see their own stuff, order status, files, invoices, whatever fits. It sounds fancy. It doesn't have to be.
The question isn't ‘do we want a portal?’ It's ‘are people calling us for info they could look up themselves?’
Signs a login would help
- Customers call or email all day asking for the same updates
- Staff stop their work to look something up and type it back
- The info already lives in a system, it's just not shared
- You look slower than you really are because answers take time
How it works, simply
Each customer logs in and sees only their own info. The page pulls straight from the system you already use, so there's no extra spreadsheet to keep up and no double typing. When your data changes, what they see changes too.
Start small
You don't need a giant portal on day one. Start with the one thing people ask about most, usually status. Get that live, see the calls drop, then add files or invoices later if it's worth it.
