AI use-case evaluation checklist

Before you reach for AI, check whether it's actually the best tool, or whether automation, software, or a process change wins.

The short answer

This is a free checklist from WL Solutions to help you make a clearer decision before you spend time or money, no signup and nothing to buy.

Start with the problem, not the tool

  • State the business problem without using the word AI
  • Confirm the underlying process is worth keeping first
  • Estimate the time or money the fix should return
  • Decide what a good outcome would actually look like
  • Ask whether you'd still want this if AI didn't exist

Compare AI against the alternatives

  • Rule-based automation: cheaper and more reliable when the steps are fixed
  • Existing software: the job may already be handled by a tool you own
  • A process change: the best fix is sometimes removing the work
  • AI: best where volume is heavy and judgment is light but fuzzy
  • Choose the simplest option that actually solves the problem

If AI is the right call

  • Keep a person reviewing the output where mistakes are costly
  • Check the data it needs is available and trustworthy
  • Prefer a proven AI feature in a tool you use over building one
  • Measure the return instead of assuming it's there
  • Be ready to walk away if the numbers don't hold up
